During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall for good.

A Journey Into the Cavern

After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a simple act of survival.

Similar to other plot points of the final season, the significance of the events in the tunnel originates in the live show the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a vessel into a dimension known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Given what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case most likely held vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, which triggered the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he struggles with the control of a dark entity, similar to how Will was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the endgame conflict that awaits.
