UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."

The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have large flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
