'Trapped in a Dreadful Dream': Loved Ones of Missing Young People Desperately Seek Information After Alpine Fire
The loved ones of teens lost after a deadly blaze at a bar in a Switzerland's alpine town are enduring an painful wait for answers and pleading for any details about their loved ones via social media.
The fire ripped through the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the small hours of New Year's Day. Verified video reveal the roof structure catching alight as bottles with sparklers are held aloft.
Officials have stated that it could take an extended period to identify the fatalities of the fire, which claimed the lives of 40 people and wounded another 119. A spokesperson noted on Friday that 113 of the those hurt have been accounted for, with work still underway to locate the other six.
In the meantime, loved ones have been posting on online platforms to appeal for any news about their missing relatives who were at the bar that night.
Desperate Searches for the Missing
The whereabouts of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, 16, are still unconfirmed, according to an appeal from his parent.
The resident of a town near Lausanne, told a publication that she had gone back to the city to see if he was in the medical facility, while his father did the equivalent search in Bern, but could not find him.
"This is a living nightmare, a nightmare. The options are finding my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in a serious state. It's terrible," she stated.
She added that some of his peers had been discovered with injuries covering nearly half their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they endured a terrifying ordeal."
The Italy's government has confirmed that six of its young people have not been located.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage junior golfer, who hailed from Genoa but now residing in the UAE.
The Italian Golf Federation has released a tribute that he is deceased, without mentioning the tragedy, honoring a "young athlete who embodied dedication and true sportsmanship."
His father, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around midnight. An official spokesperson has indicated that a official announcement of his death is awaited.
Additional Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also unaccounted for. His parent explained that he had been on holiday but had gone out with a group and found himself at the bar.
"A companion said they escaped after the fire started and that he had his phone with him, but then at a specific moment he couldn't see him anymore," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a identifiable piece of jewelry.
One of his teachers said, "I remember his good nature and positive demeanor, alongside great responsibility. He would frequently ask if get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Greek and Swiss citizenship but lives full-time in Switzerland, was also present on New Year's Eve, according to reports.
Her brother has shared an urgent request on social media, saying the family has had "no updates" regarding the teenager or the group she was with, who are also reported missing.
Consular authorities from her other nation say they are closely watching the situation.
