The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
