The Actress States Mentioning Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ Tearing the Nation Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she no longer feels suitable to speak out countering the Trump presidency, concerned it could exacerbate unhelpful debate and deepen rifts across the country.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Says the Actress
In a recent interview, the Oscar winner reflected, “During the first Trump administration, I thought I was acting frantically like a chicken with my head cut off. But experience has shown, over multiple voting cycles, Hollywood stars fail to influence in any way on electoral choices.”
She continued, “Why continue? I’m just sharing my opinion on an issue that’s going to heighten conflict dividing the nation apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Lawrence has previously been open about backing Republican and Democratic candidates over the years. Brought up by Republican parents in her home state, she supported the Republican nominee in 2008 prior to switching to the Democrats and stating she understood during Obama’s administration that voting Republican was undermining her personal freedoms as a woman.
Previous Comments
In 2015, she commented that Trump winning the presidency might signal “the end of the world” and endorsed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. During the most recent election, she lent her support to the Democratic nominee, “since I feel she’s an excellent choice and I am confident that she will make every effort to defend reproductive rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
Lawrence was joined by many in the entertainment industry in her opposition to Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the minimal impact stars have over the public choices was emphasized by the outcome.
“This upcoming term feels different,” commented she about Trump’s presidency. “As he stated his intentions. We knew what he did for his first term. He was explicit. And that’s what we chose.”
Current Projects
The actor is currently promoting her new film, director Lynne Ramsay’s drama in which she stars as a new mother who struggles with her emotional state in the countryside. During a media event for the project in the film festival, Lawrence spoke about the conflict in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s mortifying. What’s taking place is equivalent to a humanitarian crisis and it’s awful.”
Broader Concerns
The actress elaborated by saying that she was disheartened by “the lack of civility in the conversations of American politics right now and how that is going to be accepted to the younger generation now. It’s going to be typical to them that elected officials deceive.”
The actor sought to redirect outrage about the conflict to decision-makers rather than entertainers. “Stay focused on the people in charge,” she said, seen by observers as a nod to the then-recent pledge supported by more than 4,000 Hollywood professionals to avoid Israeli film institutions.
Individual Insights
The actor, who received an Academy Award aged 22 for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, is receiving praise for her portrayal in the new film. Although Lynne Ramsay has disputed the narrative being seen as one of postpartum depression and psychosis, she shared that she did relate to parts of her film narrative after the delivery of her new baby, soon after shooting ended.
“There was concern about my child,” she said, “just picturing every worst-case scenario, and then doubting everything that I was attempting. I was already in therapy, but I started taking a medication called that medicine and I used it for 14 days and it really helped.”
Professional Experiences
The actor also mentioned of the liberating necessity of shooting revealing sequences in the movie while she was expecting and unable to exercise.
“It’s refreshing,” she said, regarding the need to set aside self-consciousness. “Honestly, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What separates me between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
