Greenlandic Women Claim Legal Triumph over Fight against the Danish State over Coerced Contraceptive Coil Scandal.

Survivors of a historical campaign in which numerous comprising Greenlandic women and girls were forcibly fitted using intrauterine devices (IUDs) absent informed permission are declaring victory in their legal fight against Copenhagen.

Officials have announced the women will be eligible for financial redress from a reconciliation fund.

Government Settlement Finalized

The Danish parliament, along with state authorities, reached an agreement that entitles approximately four thousand five hundred affected individuals to claim kr. 300,000 (£35,000) per person.

This decision follows a three-year campaign led by 143 claimants who filed a lawsuit demanding damages over the trauma and distress they experienced, arguing it constituted a violation of fundamental personal rights.

Colonial Background

Denmark administered Greenland as a colony until 1953 and retained authority over the island's healthcare system into the late 20th century.

In September, following a long period of failing to acknowledge the violations, Denmark made an expression of regret. The prime minister apologized for the “systemic discrimination” targeting women and girls by the Danish healthcare system.

“It has had major consequences on the affected women who have experienced not only bodily and mental trauma,” said a senior official.

Compensation Procedure Outlined

The health ministry clarified those who were given the procedure covertly during a thirty-one year period can seek compensation starting next year. Relevant legislation will come into force by mid-year.

Based on the findings from a independent inquiry of medical procedures from that era, roughly 4,500 women may be entitled to compensation.

To qualify, applicants will need to:

• Provide a “credible report” of the incident.
• Have lived in Greenland throughout the qualifying period.
• State on oath that they possessed no knowledge nor gave permission for it to occur.

Voices of Victims

A plaintiffs, who was fourteen at the time she was instructed to go to the hospital for no clear reason, described it as feeling a violation.

“Our activism as speakers and interviewees proved successful,” she said. “We started in 2022 and now within three years we have secured an apology plus compensation.”

A different voice shared happiness, saying, “We are happy. Like my mother said: we won.” Although some believe the compensation should have been greater, they expressed relief over the recognition of what happened.

Official Reactions

A Greenlandic official called the settlement as “well past due”. Stating clearly, “This isn't about the money. It is about formal acknowledgment of the hurt and the very severe consequences.”

The relevant cabinet member conceded the scandal represent a “dark chapter in our shared history”, noting that compensation “cannot remove the pain for survivors” but it “serves to recognize and apologise for the experiences.”
