Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
The economist announced he would withdraw from public roles after House committee made public his repeated messages with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.

He commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, excited about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate following their development".

The former Harvard president, who once led the prestigious university, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released emails showed that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected human trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it accepted Summers' choice to step down.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," OpenAI remarked.

Congressional Action

This news arrives after both chambers of Congress decided on recently to pass a legislation that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its records on Epstein.

The legislation will subsequently head to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has said he expects to endorse the bill, after reversing his stance on the issue following pressure from his followers.

Message Details

A group of financier-linked emails released by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced numerous well-known personalities in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those individuals.

The communications showed that Summers and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to link Summers to prominent global figures.

Individual Statement

After the emails were released with the general audience, Summers expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided decision to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he desired "to rebuild trust and fix bonds with the individuals nearest to me".

Previous Positions

He led the institution from five years and remains a academic there. When stating his step-down from public commitments recently on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in Washington where he was a researcher, verified that he was ceased to be associated with the institution.
