Chicago's MLB Team Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Two-Year Contract.

In a notable move for their retooling roster, the South Side team have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract bringing in the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Added Benefits

The deal features a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with salaries of sixteen million for the upcoming season and $17M for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
  • Half a million dollars for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for ranking in the top ten.
  • $250,000 for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his consent and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the term. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Historical Context

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club would also receive a 15% cut of any triggered salary escalators.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to play for the White Sox, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the division but showing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, surpassing the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His last year was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an side strain. Even with striking out 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in 892 games. Early in his career playing mostly at first base, he has spent most of his time to third.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 win. The next night in the title match against the Team USA, he slugged a game-tying homer in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's eventual title triumph.

The power hitter is set to be unveiled at a media availability on Monday.
