Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her American tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
