The North London club has declared that its much-debated sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will expire in the coming June.

Background and Scrutiny

The arrangement, said to be worth around £10m per year, began in 2018 and has since been heavily criticized.

Such scrutiny is due to accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 forces in ongoing conflicts in the eastern region of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Months ago, Arsenal faced allegations of committing a disrespectful act to the Congolese government by failing to convene with the DRC's foreign minister to discuss the partnership.

Partnership Structure and Objectives

Visit Rwanda operates as a branch of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a government department.

It is widely believed that Arsenal committed to and maintained this partnership primarily to expand their fanbase in Africa.

Nevertheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “mutually agreed” to go their separate ways.

“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the original goals of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and sustainable tourism, motivating countless fans to visit the nation, and establishing a durable base for tourism growth,” stated an club announcement.

The release further noted that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while implementing local football projects that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches improve their techniques and inspire greater participation in sport across the country.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, portrayed the arrangement as a “important voyage” and stated it had been “advancing” the club's aspirations.

However, this perspective was not shared by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the protest movement Gunners Supporting Peace demonstrating outside the North London venue during the initial Champions League semi-final match against the French club in the end of April.

Protesters displayed a sign stating “Drop Visit Rwanda” and provided wristbands to conceal the Rwanda branding on jerseys.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

During that period, PSG continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Simultaneously, the Spanish club entered a new agreement for the same period that has resulted in the emblem appearing on the La Liga side's men's and women's shirts.
